The Chaitra month is considered to be very auspicious. The month got its name from the Chaitra Nakshatra. It is believed that Brahmadev created the universe on the day of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. Hence this day is celebrated as the new year in the form of Gudi Padwa, Ugadi or Cheti Chand in different parts of the India. It is the first month of the Hindu calendar. Bhagwan Ram was born on the 9th day of Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) which is celebrated as Rama Navami. Chaitra month is also said to be sacred month as, Lord Hanuman was born and his birth is celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti on the full Moon day. Shitalashtami Pujan

Shitlashtami falls on the Ashtami tithi of Chaitra month Krishna Paksha. Shitala or Sheetala means to cool down. Skanda Purana describes Shitlamata as the goddess who helps get rid of diseases (Jwaras). As per the rituals the kitchen fire is not lit in the house on the day of Shitalashtami, all the food is prepared a day prior. For the blessings of Devi Shitalamata surroundings are kept clean and freshly cooked food is not consumed on the day of Shitalashtami. As stale food is offered to Shitala Mata on the day of Shitalashtami, this festival is also called as Basoda. The reason behind eating stale food is that, this day marks the end of spring season and the arrival of summer. This also signifies that we should stop eating stale food in summer as it can be harmful for the health.

Paap Mochani Ekadashi

Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month is called Paap Mochani Ekadashi. This is called Paap Mochani Ekadashi because it is believed to destroy all the sins of a person. By this fast, a person can be free from his sins and he can get all the happiness that he desired. As the name suggests, Paap means sins and Mochan means removal.
