Shitlashtami falls on the Ashtami tithi of Chaitra month Krishna Paksha. Shitala or Sheetala means to cool down. Skanda Purana describes Shitlamata as the goddess who helps get rid of diseases (Jwaras). As per the rituals the kitchen fire is not lit in the house on the day of Shitalashtami, all the food is prepared a day prior. For the blessings of Devi Shitalamata surroundings are kept clean and freshly cooked food is not consumed on the day of Shitalashtami. As stale food is offered to Shitala Mata on the day of Shitalashtami, this festival is also called as Basoda. The reason behind eating stale food is that, this day marks the end of spring season and the arrival of summer.
