Dussehra (30th September 2017)
Dussehra is celebrated on the 10th day of Navratri. This day marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana. Legend has it that Ravana, the mighty ruler was from the lineage of Lord Brahma. Pleased by his knowledge, devotion and his penance Lord Shiva blessed him with near immortality. But his arrogance on gaining the boon led to his downfall. There is a lesser known side to this story too. Ravana, considered to be one of the foremost among learned men of his time, knew that his downfall would be at the hands of a worthy divine energy. Lord Rama was an Avtaar of lord Vishnu and lord Hanuman was an Avtaar of lord Shiva. Together they were formidable and this led to Ravana’s downfall. Dussehra also marks the slaying of the demon Mahishasura by Devi Durga.
After 9 holy nights of Navratri, a fresh golden dawn marks the holy day of Dussehra. People rise early, bathe, wear a tilak, offer flowers and fruits to Lord Rama and celebrate. In almost all parts of India an effigy of Ravana is burnt on that day. This symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. The 16 mukhi Rudraksha known as Jai Rudraksha is blessed by Lord Rama. The 11 mukhi is blessed by Lord Hanuman. Wearing these Rudraksha on Dussehra is considered extremely auspicious. People also wear a combination of 9, 10 and 11 mukhi Rudraksha as a power combination graced by the Navdurgas, 10 Avtaars of Lord Vishnu and Lord Hanuman.
Though the nine days of Navratri are dedicated to Navdurgas a lesser known fact is that the 10th day called as Dussehra / Vijaya Dashami is supremely blessed by Vijaya Lakshmi. So bright is her form and infinite grace that anybody who invokes her on this day is known to experience affluence and abundance. The 7 mukhi Rudraksha is blessed by Goddess Lakshmi. Wearing this Rudraksha with the 16 or 10 mukhi on Dussehra is also very auspicious. Rudraksha can be worn by anyone to harness the universal power of the almighty God. Wearing of Rudraksha while participating in Pooja and remembering Lord Rama is said to shower the wearer with positive energy. Gifting a power combination of Rudraksha to your loved ones to live a life of grace and dignity is also very auspicious. Success is not merely a destination but a divine journey.
